The struggle for creative graduates

So what are these young creatives to do?

I believe the onus is on the Gradaute to show their initiative more than ever, being proactive in their approach to agencies, and with an ability to adapt. Naturally these qualities are always going to help differentiate the best graduates from the rest but its now even more important.

Why is it more important?

It can be as straight forward as some simple maths, as more and more students are studying degrees within the creative sector, it quite simply becomes an equation of (lots of students + fewer jobs = fewer opportunities). Now if everyone were to read it like that, then no one would even bother to apply for any jobs. Instead a belief is needed in your own ability to stand out from your peers, along with an understanding that as a Graduate, you are a sizeable risk for any agency.

This is where the Graduate must try their darn hardest to de-risk themselves as much as possible. This is achievable by the process of proving themselves, whether it be through an internship or romancing agencies with fantastic work, ideas and initiative.

Where is the help?

This leads me neatly on to a fantastic project that we have got involved in, which is there to help de-risk the process of agencies taking on Graduates. The Graduate Internship, run in conjunction with the AUCB, provides a no-strings ?1000 grant towards the Graduates wage, if employed for atleast 3 months. Simply put this Government led scheme is the perfect tonic to help stimulate investment in Graduates, in what are harsh economic times. To find out more details on the scheme then please visit www.gradintern.co.uk.

What do you all think?

I would love to hear recent Graduates experiences, and how they have found getting a job within the creative sector. For those of you fortunate enough to gain employment, are there any tips you would share . . .

I now leave it open to you.
